Lisha na Valisha
Feed and Clothe
On May 2, 2014 at 11pm I was making my way to my university campus in Nairobi, Kenya where I was going to spend the night working on a class project.
The rain was pouring hard and I had to run from cover to cover to avoid getting soaked. In the midst of this rain...a little girl maybe 4 years old stopped me and asked for money for food. When I asked where her mom was, she pointed to a woman sitting under shelter nearby.. she was staying dry....Something in my heart broke wide open.. I stood there in the rain and I cried. Not because I was cold or tired. I cried because this little girl should have been tucked in somewhere warm and safe. Instead, she was out here alone in the dark, asking strangers for food.
This is the reality for a lot of street families in Kenya.
Many of these kids are orphaned and abandoned while others are sent out to beg because the adults in their lives are unable or unwilling to provide for them — or because begging is the only example they have been shown.
That night was so significant for me. It moved me from simply feeling bad about the problem to wanting to do something about it.
I didn't want to talk about problems without being part of the solution. I had a good childhood. I had food, warmth, and people who looked after me. I believed then, and I still believe now, that every child on earth deserves that same thing.
So that month, I started with what I had. I took some of the money I earned from my job and bought sandwich supplies and sourced clothes which I handed to children living on the streets.
In the process I realized that some of these families weren't genuine. That's when I decided to partner with other organizations that have the same goal and empower them in two ways, make sure they have food and clothes for the orphans they help off the streets.
This is the mission God has been rekindling in my heart. His desire is to see every child fed and clothed. If you would like to partner with us to feed and clothe street families in Kenya, please fill out the form below to learn how you can donate money for food, clothes and blankets.
